Eco-friendly Holiday Gifts and Decorating

Sometimes the holiday season takes its toll on those who feel like they have enough “stuff” and that the malls, commercials, and catalogues in December create a massive push to buy stuff, give stuff, exchange stuff, and buy more stuff.  Isn’t there a comedic routine about the “stuff” we all have?  Oh yes, George Carlin.  Anyhow, here are a few ways to decorate and create unique gifts while minimizing the impact on your wallet and the environment.  The idea is to use things you already own to create a festive atmosphere with minimal effort.

1. JAZZ UP YOUR TREEWhat you already have: solid-color ornaments.  What you need: glitter glue and stick-on embellishments.  I like Darice self-stick gems, which you can find at Michael’s.   Any local craft store will have a greater variety of colors.  The self-stick gems are great because you can stick them right on the ornament in whatever pattern you choose.  No glue-gun required!

Take another ornament and work some magic with the glitter glue.  I embrace glitter glue almost as much as my five year-old niece does.  It’s hard to mess up and if errors occur, the good news is that most are washable.  Try making gold swirling patterns on a gold ornament, red on red, etc.  This usually looks the classiest on the tree.  But also feel free to try something bolder, like silver on blue.

  2.  NATURE, BUT BETTERWhat you already have: pinecones, ornaments, and a vase.  What you need: just the glitter glue!  Explore your backyard to see what interesting pieces of nature await.  Inspiration may not strike until you actually see what’s out there.  For city dwellers, keep your eyes open on your next walk or jog through the park.   Using that same glitter pen, dot some silver sparkliness along the tips of the pinecones.  Cover the top and bottom of the tips like so:

Let the pinecones dry overnight.  Combine sparkly pinecones with silver ornaments in a vase.  Repetition is key, so fill a few vases with the same contents.  Instantly, a sophisticated arrangement graces your dinner table, coffee table, or mantle.

 3.  EASY CANDLE ARRANGMENTWhat you already have: candles and a tray.  What you need: greens from the great outdoors.  This works best with a few same-color candles.  Arrange a few on a tray and spread the greens, pinecones, or acorns around them.  Place the finished product in your bathroom or on two end tables.

4.  RECYCLED GIFTS.  Ok, so getting crafty just isn’t for you?  Check out these practical, eco-friendly gifts online.

  • For your fashionista sister, buy this adorable clutch made of recycled magazine pages at Uncommon Goods.
  • For the music lover, a bowl made of an old vinyl record.
  • For Mom and Dad, a vintagey-looking frame created with bike chains.

5.  GIVE EXPERIENCES.  Completely fed up with consumerism and more “stuff”?  Instead of wandering through the malls looking for predictable slippers or a scarf, give your loved ones a unique experience.  You can do it together and create lasting memories.

  •  Take a chance on a hot-air balloon ride, a gondola cruise, or a flight lesson!  At http://www.xperiencedays.com/default.asp, it is easy to search by city for fun adventures like glass blowing, helicopter rides, and even sky diving.

6.  BE A DO-GOODER.  Cross family off of your shopping list while simultaneously giving to a charity or service group in need.

  •  Purchase theater tickets or a private pilates session through the Boston Cares Holiday Auction on ebay.  Not only will you find a unique gift, but 100% of your bid will be directed to Boston Cares, an organization that coordinates a wide array of direct service volunteer projects, including tutoring and park cleanups.  Check out the items up for auction here.

  • Further the mission of Autism Speaks when you buy sophisticated Lia Sophia jewelry before December 12.  Visit www.liasophia.com/wendim, click on “our jewelry,” then “Fall/Winter 2009 catalog,” type in "Autism Speaks," and you will receive a discount of buy two and then get up to four items for ½ off!  Part of the proceeds will go towards awareness, family services, and direct grants to fund research to find a cause or cure for autism.

These are all amazing ideas! I love the fact that you don't even have to leave your backyard to decorate your home in a festive way. I'm also crazy about the "experience" gifts. In some ways, those are much more memorable than anything material. Great, great ideas!

What great ideas! This gives me even more reasons to be obsessed with glitter glue! Seriously, everything you made looks like it could be bought at pottery barn (but not at the exorbitant prices). Thanks Catherine! I always love a good excuse to get crafty!

Thanks for including the beautiful photographs - they are most inspiring. Last year a friend suggested that we omit gifts to each other and plan an "experience" together - and we all went to Jacob's Pillow for a flamenco dance performance in June!
